Parish Councils have a range of responsibilities, duties and powers which are set out in a host of different Acts of Parliament. There is a distinct difference between a duty which is something the Parish Council must do and a power which is something they may do (i.e. discretionary).
Below is a list (but not exhaustive) of general powers and duties of a Parish Council - (it should be noted that the Parish Council does not currently use all the powers that are available to it).
Local Government is usually made up in three tiers - Parish Council's, District Council's and County Council's. The 'Who is Responsible for What' chart below gives a quick guide and although it is not intended to be an exhaustive list, it does provide an indication of some of the main functions and duties at each level. The links for emailing and for connecting to the respective local authority web site are fully functional by clicking on them.
